Christmas Trees made from magazines.

We have spent the last few weeks folding our magazines to turn them into Christmas trees. Mrs Minehan took them home and spray painted them, then today we decorated them and sprinkled glitter to make them sparkle. It was lots of fun but quite challenging to fold the pages but Mrs Swinburn and Mrs Minehan think we have made a fantastic job. .

Christmas Figgy Pudding

Today we learnt about what a Christmas Figgy pudding is. Did you know it was made with figs and that is why it is called figgy? After we had created them, we opened a new Explain Everything project and put in a background, then we took a photo of our Figgy Puddings and made them move across our background. We recorded them moving while we said,
"Run, run as fast as you can,
You can't catch me, I'm a Figgy Pudding!"

Fun Friday

We had lots of fun today learning new things.

First, we had some maths problem-solving activities to do.  The activities challenged our thinking.

We used skip counting and counting on to find out the answer to this question.

We read a very funny poem written by Spike Milligan called 'On the Ning, Nang Nong'. It was very funny and we enjoyed drawing a picture to illustrate the characters in the poem.

Harmony liked the part where the monkeys went Boo!

We also learnt how to do some algorithmic thinking. We did this by using code to make animals race each other. We tested our race challenge to make sure it worked. Next week we will challenge each other and try and predict who will win the race.

We ended the day with fun Hapu games that the Yr 6 house captains had organised for us. We had to do all the games inside because it was raining AGAIN!

We really enjoyed the cup challenge and go noodle dancing.

Ruma Kotuku explores MEDIA

We learnt that media can be signs, pictures, sign language, clocks, our voice, books and computers. We used our iPads to take photos of things in our classroom that are media. We went outside and made a recording about the photos we had taken. Finally we drew a picture of ourselves communicating. We learnt that media is everywhere. Have you seen all the banners about voting? They are a good example of media.

 Hapu Day Friday 18th September

Today was Crazy Hair Day!👏 Hapu are our houses that consist of family members together in each house. It was also Hapu Sports afternoon and the senior class organised all of the sports. It was fantastic! Well done senior class.

Here is a photo of Kotuku Class crazy hair

Some did forget to smile but I think it is a cool photo of a very cool class. Some had wigs, devil ears, long plaits, coloured hair, plenty of pigtails like Pippi Longstocking! Zoe won it for Koutku with her lookalike Pippi Longstocking hair.

We went on an adventure in a bubble!

We had a great session with our big buddies from Ruma Piwakawaka. We watched a movie about a girl going on an adventure on a bubble and then our buddies talked about where we would like to go to if we were travelling on a bubble. They had to finf a picture of that place and use it as a backdrop. Then we found a bubble picture and added it t the picture. Next they took a photo of us and used remove.bg to take away the background so we could be on or in the bubble. Finally they shoed us how to make an animation about our trip. They have added a link to their blogs where they have embeded the animations. Then it was our turn to show them something we had learnt on Explain Everything. We drew ourselves on our bubble and then we recorded our story. We had so much fun today.

Lending a hand to show KINDNESS

Today we watched a short video where we saw how when we show kindness to each other we can colour our world. We discussed as a class how we have brought kindness to our lives and then we wrote a story to share our experiences. We added an illustration to a hand to show how we are lending a hand to show KINDNESS.

Crystal from the library came to visit.

Today Crystal from the Westland Library came to visit us. She shared the story of Abigail with us and then we made a sun out of a paper plate, wool and crepe paper. The Westland Library was very kind and left our school a copy of this great book for our school library. We had a bit of fun sharing our suns and hope you will be enjoy seeing our artwork on display at the Hokitika library.

Mrs King's Egg Challenge

Mrs King's egg challenge is progressing well. Mrs King's challenge was to see how high we could bounce a raw egg!

How do we do that we thought?

Isla had done an experiment like this before and she said that we needed vinegar, glass jars and a raw egg.

We decided to try 3 different types of vinegar. White vinegar, cider vinegar and malt vinegar.

We wondered which one would bounce the highest.

We have left them for 5 days and when we test them it will be 7 days.

Olly said that he thinks that the shell might go away and then you are left with skin with stuff inside and yolk in the stuff inside.

We wonder if he will be right with his prediction.

That sounded interesting.

We added blue food colouring to the white vinegar

We added green food colouring to the cider vinegar.

The eggs are bubbling in the vinegar. Maybe what Olly said could be happening.

We are going to test the eggs on Friday and see if they bounce and if they do how high they will bounce.

We are wondering which one will bounce the highest.

What do you think? Cider, malt or white vinegar.........

This is what happened.

Tuesday, 5 May 2020

I think, it could be a good day to say, a big huge…THANK-YOU to all the parents of Kotuku class. You make sure that your child gets to hangouts and you make sure they complete the set activities. THANK-YOU

Today Kotuku learned  something a little bit different. I can see that it is going to be an excellent tool for when we get back into school.

Today Jamboard was in!! SO over the next few days we will see just what Kotuku class can create. So watch this space people. We have one in already! Well done Aahil

All the hard work just keeps on coming in and there is great work being completed by everyone.
We are all learning how to sign  language our name, which we are going to present at an assembly. So you will just have to wait for those videos.
Remember Kotuku, I am waiting for those challenges: I have too:
Make a coffee cake
Do the floss dance in the rain
Clean the kitchen floor!
Make some scones

All of which I have to video

So now: here are some photos of Kotuku activities

I have never made Oobleck Violet.

Having a fun time with the scavenger hunt with her  little brother

This is a bit tricky to read, but Violet, Tasman and I read the book 'Richie the Mouse'. Their task was to draw me, Ms Ritchie, as the mouse.

I make a fabulous mouse Violet and Tasman.

That is  a rocking good space ship Pippa!

During lockdown and level 3, some of Kotuku have been writing to each other.

Scarlett inside her reading hut. It looks very comfy.

Going to make this a really large image, so that everyone would like a piece

Wow!  this is our first Jamboard!!!!! I LOVE IT Aahil. It is all very new

but I am super proud that you gave this ago! Yes superstar. It was from their reading book Mrs Grimble's Grapevine

Sam's super large space-rocket… the best thing is he can get inside it.

Sam and his Mum have been working on fractions together.  I loved the video Sam as I could hear your brain ticking while you were working these tricky questions out.

Yes, we are still completing our spelling.

Fancy writing! Even better than Ms Ritchie!

How to reconnect with grandparents-  from Violet

Hokitika at it's best!

Love this Isla and I love the video as well, so watch out for them to come onto the blog

The biggest piece of Pounamu that I have seen Mateus. You could carve your own necklace.

Just as well you didn't do these on Dad's Lawn Olly!

Did you make it Isla? Ms Ritchie would have fallen off!
